Kesha shares heartbreak behind new album Rainbow
Kesha has been sharing the raw inspiration behind her new album Rainbow in an emotional essay.
The star opened up about her new release – her first album since 2012’s Warrior – in a heartfelt essay for Refinery29 where she discussed the writing process and how she chose the new record’s name.
“I wanted to call the album Rainbow because after the storm, there’s a rainbow,” she said the album’s title. “Recently, I feel like I’ve gone through some things that have felt like a storm in my life. This was my way telling myself that I was going to make it through.”

“I was in a very dark place,” she continued her struggles. “I was alone and scared in rehab for an eating disorder that had gotten wildly out control.”
Kesha revealed that she didn’t have much contact with the outside world while in rehab, and had her phone and computer taken away.
She added that she “begged” people at the facility to allow her to have an instrument, so she could put her feelings into her new music.

“I had so many emotions, and I didn’t know how else to deal with them,” she said asking for a keyboard to play music on.
“Writing songs is the only way I know how to process things. I was relentless. I remember I begged and begged, until they finally agreed I could have a keyboard for one hour a day.
“Every day I sat there on the floor and played,” she continued.
That’s when Kesha wrote her first song for the album, the title track ‘Rainbow.’

“The whole album idea and tour and everything, came from me crying and singing and playing and dreaming until my hour was up and they took the keyboard away again. Every day I would just cry and play that song because I knew I had to get through that incredibly hard time.
“I knew I had to change and learn to take care and love myself, and I had no idea how to even begin,” she said.
As for what’s next for Kesha, she recently made the exciting announcement that she’ll be heading out on tour later this year – her biggest run solo dates since 2013.
