Dapper Dan is the New Face of Gucci’s Tailoring Campaign
It took decades but Dapper Dan is finally getting his respect from luxury fashion brands. On Monday, Gucci revealed Dan would be part its latest fall campaign for menswear tailoring.
Photos from the new campaign show f Dapper Dan’s classic style as he hangs out in Harlem during a normal day. Conceived by Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele, the photos were taken by Glen Luchford.
According to a report from The New York Times, the the collaboration between Gucci and Dapper Dan doesn’t stop at a campaign. The fashion label will also help Dan reopen his uptown store which was shut down in 1992 after multiple copyright infringement violations. Gucci will provide Dan with upscale fabrics and allow him to do what he pleases with it.
The partnership comes just months after Gucci was accused copying one Dapper Dan’s designs — a puffy fur bomber with Louis Vuitton monograms. Michele said it wasn’t a copy but rather an homage, and Dan saw it the same way.
He told The New York Times, “I was just excited about it being there. The part about appropriation, Alessandro and I are part two parallel universes. The magic that took place as a result what he did was bringing these two parallel universes together. That opened a dialogue between us when we finally got in touch with each other. I found out how similar our experiences were, the way he grew up and the way I grew up, and how he was influenced by me. I was never apprehensive about what took place. The public was more up in arms than me.”
Dapper Dan’s new tailor shop is expected to open at the end the year. Check out some the photos from the fall campaign below.
