Andy Cohen Replaces Kathy Griffin as CNN New Year's Eve Co-Host
Andy Cohen has been tapped to co-host CNN's New Year's Eve telecast alongside Anderson Cooper after Griffin was fired by the news network earlier this year.
“Andy is the life the party wherever he goes, and what bigger party is there than New Year's Eve? It is going to be a blast!” said Cooper in Wednesday's announcement.
Added Cohen, “I've been friends with Anderson for 25 years. We've traveled the world together and performed in 30-plus cities with AC2 and it's all led to this one huge night!”
CNN terminated its agreement with Griffin in May days after she appeared in a controversial photo shoot that included a photo her holding a depiction President Donald Trump's bloodied head. “We found what she did disgusting and fensive,” the network said in a statement at the time. “We are pleased to see she has apologized and asked that the photos be taken down.”
At the time, Cooper was also critical Griffin's actions, tweeting that he was “appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.”
Prior to the photo shoot, Cooper and Griffin had hosted the New Year's Eve special together for nine years, beginning in 2007. Cooper's tenure on the program dates back farther to 2002.
When Cooper appeared on Cohen's Bravo late-night show Watch What Happens Live in July, he said he and Griffin were “still friends.” However, in August, Griffin told New York magazine that their friendship had ended in the wake the scandal.
Cohen also has a long-standing relationship with Griffin from his time as a network executive at Bravo. He executive produced several her stand-up specials that premiered on the NBCUniversal cabler in the early 2000s. During that time, Griffin also headlined her own Bravo reality series, My Life on the D List, which ran for six seasons before it ended in 2010.
For his part, Cohen has also hosted several New Year's Eve specials in recent years, dating back to 2010. He most recently hosted New Year's Eve Game Night With Andy Cohen for NBC this past year, which averaged a 1.0 rating in the adults 18-49 demo.
Because their friendship, Cohen and Cooper have frequently appeared on each other's program. Most recently, Cohen appeared Monday on Anderson Cooper 360 to dissect the president's recent tweets. Both Cohen and Cooper have also served as frequent guest co-hosts on fellow friend and media personality Kelly Ripa's morning show, particularly before Ryan Seacrest was named her permanent co-host.
